Renew Emphasis on Public Policy

  • Conducted a roundtable with ICMA and NLC on Public Policy issues
  • Retooled City Manager’s Symposium with partnership with the University of Georgia
  • Established a renewed focus on HIV/AIDS with Strategic partnership with the AIDS Healthcare Foundation and its African American Affinity group the Black Leadership AIDS Crisis Coalition (BLACC) in the United States and abroad to tackle HIV/AIDS
    • Working with universities on women’s issues, notably on gender-based violence
    • Collaborating with AHF with Public Policy Forums and Days of Activism
    • Seeking new ways for public administrators to educate and inform residents about this epidemic
  • Successfully revamped and retooled the National Mentor Program
    • Mentor Program, Feb. 3-5, virtual. Cost reduced. 
    • Private donors contributed funds to sponsor 4 scholarships, $500 each, one of the donors wanted focus in the area of engineering or construction management. 
  • Established Partnership with Georgetown University for Credentialed ELI Program
    • ELI Program kicked off January 28 – hosted virtually by Georgetown University.
    • 14 participants in the inaugural class at a cost is $11,000.
    • Participants will receive a certificate.
  • Identified Gun Violence  Among Youth as Public Policy Topic in Partnership with the Fund Development Committee (Year 1)
    • 36,000 Americans are killed by guns each year
    • 100,000 are shot and injured.
    • Nearly two thirds of all gun deaths are gun suicides
    • NFBPA is partnering with other key national organizations, National Medical Association, National Organization of Blacks in Law Enforcement (NOBLE), and others on measures to prevent violence and coordinate ongoing efforts, with focus on youth (15-24).
  • Collaborated across jurisdictions to assess and evaluate existing programs and their effectiveness (Joyce Foundation)
  • Convened violence prevention experts and researchers with public administrators across the country to share methodologies and best practices.
  • Established and Convened African American to discuss best practices and solutions surrounding COVID-19, Police Brutality, and other issues impacting their communities.
  • Establishing a Community of Practice in Gun Violence
  • Created Resource Page for COVID-19 and Racial Bias
  • Initiated Several new grant proposals aimed at solidifying our Public Policy focuses (Description of Proposals)

  • Established the National Affinity Public Policy Executive Roundtable now known as the “Affinity 4” Executive Roundtable to ensure the voices of its diverse memberships are heard, particularly when advocating on behalf of government and social justice issues.
